A Little About Us

PLPD is staffed by 20 full-time sworn Officers (this number includes 12 Patrol Officers, 2 Detectives, 4 Sergeants, 2 Lieutenants, and a Chief), 1 full-time Office Coordinator, 3 full-time and 3 part-time Dispatchers, 1 full-time Administrative Assistant, and 4 Limited Term Community Service Officers. Together these employees provide the following:

 

• Emergency Dispatch Services: 24-hours a day for Platteville Police Department Officers, Southwest Health EMS, the Platteville Fire Dept., and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Campus Police Dept.

• Contingency Dispatch Center for the Grant Co. Sheriff’s Dept. and back-up 911 Emergency Call Center for Grant County.

• Enforcement of state statutes, local ordinances, and traffic laws.

• Specialized Investigations: 2 detectives pursue matters requiring time-intensive investigation or incidents requiring expertise not typically possessed by officers.

• Patrol of the City to detect criminal activity and to provide a police presence.

• Community Policing: Engaging members of the community to resolve issues of mutual concern.

• School Officer (CRO): Works extensively in the schools and coordinates community events and outreach for the PD.

• Community Service Officers: UW-Platteville (and sometimes Southwest Tech) students employed as non-sworn members of the PD handle non-emergency calls for service, traffic direction, animal complaints, home security checks, and enforce parking ordinances.

• In-house Training of Officers: To enhance professionalism, engage in career development, reduce overtime, and provide officers with the skills needed to respond to calls for service in a rapidly changing environment.

• Member of the Richland-Iowa-Grant Drug Task Force: A unit specializing in the investigation of drug related incidents.

• Crisis Resolution Team: The PD participates in the multi-county tactical team (SWERT) which responds to calls of an elevated risk such as barricaded suspects, high risk warrant service, etc.

• Crossing guard duties at Camp/Lancaster Intersection.
